CCTV footage may hold key to Gagangir attack investigation

CCTV footage captures a shawl-clad militant entering the believed to be Gagangir tunnel construction site, raising questions about his involvement in the recent attack. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.

As the investigation into the Gagangir attack intensifies, CCTV footage has surfaced showing a militant wielding a gun, reportedly one of the attackers involved in the Sonamarg incident.

However, questions have been raised about the authenticity of the footage due to mismatched dates.

The CCTV grab displays a shawl-clad militant allegedly linked to the Gagangir attack in Jammu and Kashmir.

While media sources are sharing the footage, investigators are yet to confirm whether the AK rifle-wielding militant carried out the October 20 attack that resulted in the deaths of seven individuals, including a local doctor, and injured five others.

The footage shows the militant entering a prefabricated hut, believed to be the Gagangir tunnel construction site, although its authenticity remains under scrutiny.

The timestamp on the footage reads “January 27,” which sources suggest may be due to a technical issue with the settings. The rifle carried by the militant is marked with a blue colour on the muzzle.

Official sources have indicated that analysis of trends and terror patterns suggests that the specific marking and the AK weapon are commonly used by militants targeting security forces in the Pir Panjal area, approximately 200 km from the attack site.

Furthermore, the militant in the footage has an exposed face, while survivors reported that the attackers at Gagangir had covered their faces.

During the investigation, a senior police official stated that it would be premature to draw conclusions or comment on the CCTV footage at this stage, as more information is expected to emerge. The officer warned that premature conclusions could jeopardise the ongoing investigation into the case.
