A team of Central disaster management experts visited the landslide-hit Vilangad region in Kozhikode district, Kerala, to assess the destruction caused by a landslide on July 30.
The disaster struck the high-range hamlet of Vilangad the same day as landslides devastated villages in neighbouring Wayanad.
The study team included R Pradeep Kumar, Director of the Central Building Research Institute (CBRI) in Roorkee, along with CBRI scientists D P Kanungo and Ajay Chourasia, and Sekhar Kuriakose, Member Secretary of the State Disaster Management Authority.
They inspected heavily affected areas like Vayad, Panniyeri, Malayangadu, and Vilangad town.
District authorities reported that panchayat and revenue officials accompanied the team during the inspection. The visit is part of efforts to evaluate the extent of the damage and plan further rehabilitation.
An all-party meeting convened by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan recently decided to carry out rehabilitation for the victims of Vilangad, alongside survivors in Wayanad, where over 200 people lost their lives in the Mundakkai and Chooralmala landslides.
The Central team’s assessment will help shape future measures to ensure safety and aid for the affected communities.
