In a boost to medical education and healthcare infrastructure in Jharkhand, the Centre has cleared a major increase in MBBS and postgraduate seats in two of the state’s key medical institutions.
At Shaheed Nirmal Mahto Medical College and Hospital in Dhanbad, the number of MBBS seats has been raised from 100 to 250, adding 150 new seats. MGM Medical College has also received approval for a substantial increase in undergraduate medical seats.
As part of the expansion initiative, the Union Government has sanctioned Rs 225 crore for strengthening MBBS infrastructure and seat capacity enhancement. Of the total amount, Rs 135 crore will be contributed by the Centre.
In addition to undergraduate admissions, the government has approved an increase in postgraduate seats across multiple departments. The move is expected to improve the availability of specialist doctors and enhance patient care services in the state.
Reacting to the approval, Health Minister Irfan Ansari said Jharkhand had faced an acute shortage of doctors for years due to inadequate expansion in medical education.
He noted that for nearly two decades, medical seats were not increased in line with the growing healthcare needs of the state. According to him, the government’s focus has been to create opportunities for students from Jharkhand to pursue medical education within the state and contribute to local healthcare services after graduation.
Officials said the decision is expected to strengthen the state’s healthcare system and gradually ease the persistent shortage of doctors and specialists across Jharkhand.
