The Government of India and the Bihar government have signed a reform-linked MoU under the Jal Jeevan Mission to strengthen long-term sustainability, operation, and maintenance of rural drinking water supply systems in the state, Union Jal Shakti Minister C R Patil said on Wednesday.
Sharing details of the agreement in a post on X, Patil said the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation (DDWS), Ministry of Jal Shakti, and the Bihar government.
He said Bihar has achieved tap water connectivity for nearly 96 per cent of rural households under the Jal Jeevan Mission and has made significant progress in expanding access to safe drinking water.
"Now the state's focus should be on strengthening the sustainability of the 'Har Ghar Jal' drinking water scheme and improving operation and maintenance arrangements," Patil said.
According to the minister, the initiative will help ensure a safe and sustainable drinking water supply to every rural household in Bihar while preserving the gains achieved under the mission.
Patil said the MoU will be an important step towards strengthening rural drinking water services and ensuring the long-term sustainability of water supply infrastructure in the state.
