Nearly 9.35 lakh Assam residents, whose Aadhaar card applications had been in limbo for over four years, will soon receive their identification, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Wednesday.
The issuance of Aadhaar cards had been halted by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) after these individuals submitted their biometric data between February and August 2019.
Sarma attributed the delay to the state’s inability to link the National Register of Citizens (NRC) with Aadhaar, creating a prolonged deadlock.
In a bid to resolve the issue, the Assam government formally approached the Centre on 29 July 2024, requesting intervention to unblock the stalled applications.
Responding to the appeal, the central government directed the UIDAI on 27 August 2024 to proceed with issuing Aadhaar cards to the affected residents.
“I met with the Union Home Minister and express my heartfelt gratitude for swiftly addressing this critical matter,” Sarma said, underscoring the move as a significant milestone in ensuring the identification and rights of Assam’s residents.
The development comes as a relief to thousands of people who have been left without official identification, impacting their access to government benefits and services.
