Leader of Opposition and former BJP Chief Minister, Jai Ram Thakur today said the Central government had assured full support to Himachal Pradesh for the relief and restoration of rain-related furies.

“I have personally met BJP leaders in Delhi and I met the Prime Minister also.

He said the Central government will extend all possible help to the state for relief and restoration,” he told media persons here.  He said the BJP stood with the victims of the natural calamity in Himachal and would do whatever was possible for their help.

He said he had personally visited the affected areas and met the victims. He said unfortunately over 50 people have been missing in the cloudbursts, and 36 of them from one village near Jhakri.

“It is not the time to do politics, it is time to help our people who are in need,” he said, asking the state government to be serious in handling the situation.

Jai Ram Thakur said the Central government had granted relief money to the state last year also, but the money was not utilized properly.

“I am sorry to say that the government has not extended proper relief to the victims of last year’s calamity. The government has been talking a lot about revising the relief amount for the people who lose their houses. Yet, the increased amount of Rs 7 lakh for them has not been given to the affected people and they have not been compensated,” he said.

He said the government has not put in adequate and sincere efforts to restore the natural course of Beas river and the contractors, who were given the task, have only minted money out of it.

“The heavy rain is bound to damage more and more, whether it is Shimla, Mandi or Kullu districts. The government must prepare on war footing to check the damage that can be caused by the rains,” he said.

The Leader of the Opposition came down heavily on the state government for changing the provisions of the HIMCARE health care scheme and said instead of streamlining, the government had preferred to stop the benefit to poor people.
