IPS officer, Tadasha Mishra was due to retire at the end of December, 2025

The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has raised strong objections to the Jharkhand government’s decision to appoint senior IPS officer, Tadasha Mishra, as the Director General of Police (DGP) just a day before she was due to retire at the end of December, 2025.

In a letter to the state government, the MHA has termed the appointment contrary to established rules and stated that Mishra should be considered retired with effect from December 31, 2025.

According to sources, correspondence between the MHA and the Jharkhand government took place on January 13, 2026, during which the Centre declared the DGP appointment unconstitutional.

The ministry has also pointed out that the last three DGP appointments made by the Jharkhand government violated prescribed norms.

The MHA had earlier objected to the appointment of Anurag Gupta as DGP as well. Gupta was also denied salary by the Accountant General’s office in Jharkhand for few months, but later he resigned from the post.

Leader of the Opposition Babulal Marandi had written to Union Home Secretary, drawing attention to the entire episode. Marandi said that after Anurag Gupta resigned from the DGP post on November 6, 2025, Tadasa Mishra was appointed as acting DGP and head of the police force, despite having only two months of service remaining at that time.

He further alleged that the state government bypassed rules and appointed Mishra as permanent DGP just one day before her retirement. The letter also described Anurag Gupta’s appointment as being against established guidelines.

The issue has triggered a fresh debate over the legality and transparency of senior police appointments in Jharkhand, with the Centre’s objections likely to intensify political and administrative scrutiny in the state.
