Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri said the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has granted stage-I approval for the Ropeway and Rapid Transport System Development Project in Shimla under the Forest Conservation Act, 1980.
He said the project is a major step towards improving Shimla’s urban transport system. A 13.79-km ropeway will be built at a cost of Rs 1,734.70 crore to connect key locations across the city. “The initiative will help in easing traffic congestion, cutting carbon emissions and promoting clean and sustainable urban mobility both for locals and tourists,” he said.
Agnihotri added that in-principle approval has been given for the use of 6.1909 hectares of forestland, following all environmental and legal guidelines. The project will create new job opportunities for local people and offer tourists a pleasant and modern travel experience, he said.
He thanked the Central Government and the Union Ministry of Environment for approving the important project. Agnihotri also assured that environmental protection will remain a top priority, and all construction work will strictly follow Forest Department norms.
