The Centre has called the fourth round of talks between the Chief Ministers of Punjab and Haryana over the long-pending Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) Canal issue. The meeting will take place in Delhi on July 9 which will be chaired by Union Minister CR Patil.

Union Ministry of Water Resources Secretary Debashree Mukherjee confirmed that the state governments had been informed about the meeting.

Both Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini are expected to attend, as confirmed in a letter sent to Punjab Chief Secretary KAP Sinha.

This marks the fourth round of talks between the Chief Ministers of Punjab and Haryana on the SYL issue while the Centre will continue  to act as mediator. The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the matter on August 13. In the meantime, the Union Ministry of Water Resources is working to facilitate a consensus between the two states. A progress report on these discussions will be submitted by the Centre during the upcoming hearing.

Originally planned for July 8, the meeting was rescheduled to July 9 at Punjab’s request. Despite three previous rounds of talks—in August 2020, October 2022, and January 2023—no resolution has been reached so far. The Centre continues to act as mediator in hopes of breaking the deadlock on this decades-old water-sharing dispute.
