Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said the government stands shoulder to shoulder with people affected by floods as he starts his visit to Himachal Pradesh and Punjab to assess the situation.
Officials said PM Modi would spend a day visiting the two states. After visiting Himachal Pradesh, he will conduct an aerial survey of flood-affected areas in Punjab. He will visit Gurdaspur, hold discussions with senior officials. He will also chair a review meeting on the ground situation.
He will interact with flood-hit residents as well as teams from NDRF, SDRF, and Aapda Mitra in Gurdaspur.
While leaving Delhi for Himachal Pradesh and Punjab, PM Modi wrote on X, “The Government of India stands shoulder to shoulder with those affected in this tragic hour.”
Punjab BJP chief Sunil Jakhar said PM Modi was deeply concerned about the flood situation in Punjab and had been closely monitoring developments.
Tight security arrangements have been made in Gurdaspur ahead of the Prime Minister’s visit.
Punjab is facing one of its worst flood disasters in decades. The floods were caused by swollen rivers — the Sutlej, Beas, and Ravi — along with seasonal rivulets, following heavy rainfall in Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir.
Recent heavy rains in Punjab have further worsened the flooding. The death toll in the state stands at 51, and crops on 1.84 lakh hectares have been damaged.
