A police constable, a home guard volunteer, and a civilian were killed when a speeding car crashed into a police naka at the Chandigarh-Zirakpur border in the early hours of Friday, officials said.
The incident took place while routine vehicle checks were being conducted at the checkpoint.
According to Deputy Superintendent of Police Jaswinder Singh, “At the time of the incident, checking of vehicles was going on at Chandigarh-Zirakpur barrier when this car came at high speed and hit them.”
The deceased include a police constable on duty, a home guard volunteer, and a 30-year-old man who was on his way home for Holi.
The civilian, an employee of a phone company in Gurugram, was returning to his native village in Mullanpur, near Chandigarh.

The vehicle, which approached the naka from the Zirakpur side, struck both the police personnel and the civilian before coming to a halt.
The driver of the offending car has been taken into custody.
When asked if the driver was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident, DSP Singh stated, “This is part of the investigation. We have registered a case, and further investigations are on.”
The accident comes just days after another fatal incident in Chandigarh, where a 24-year-old man lost his life and two women were injured when a Porsche car collided with two scooters.
Authorities have launched an inquiry into the latest crash, and measures to enhance road safety at checkpoints are under consideration.
