Two men who were allegedly involved in a firing incident at a pharmacy store in Chandigarh’s Sector 32, were held after getting injured in an encounter with police, an officer said on Wednesday.

The officer said that the exchange of fire happened at a checkpoint near Sector 39 when a police team signalled a car to stop following a tip-off. However, the occupants attempted to flee and opened fire at the police personnel, the officer added.

The two accused – identified as Rahul and Rocky – sustained bullet injuries on their legs in retaliatory firing, the officer said. They were shifted to Government Medical College and Hospital in Sector 16, where the two are undergoing treatment while a third accused, Preet, who was driving the car, has been arrested, he informed.

Police say an investigation is underway while the accused in custody is being interrogated. Officials are also probing possible links to a wider gangster network and a suspected police personnel accomplice, as well as the role of other accomplices in the incident.

On January 15, two masked men had allegedly fired shots at Sewak Pharmacy in Sector 32, Chandigarh. The shop owner’s son, Tanish, who was sitting behind the counter, narrowly escaped getting hit. His father, Jagdish, a resident of Sector 32, reached the spot on being informed by his son, and contacted the police.

Teams from the Sector-34 Police Station, the Crime Branch, the Operation Cell, and the District Crime Branch rushed to the scene and took hold of footage from CCTV cameras in the vicinity. The footage revealed two youths arriving on an Activa scooter, opening fire at the pharmacy, and fleeing the scene. An empty cartridge was also recovered from the spot by the forensic team.

The Punjab government launched a full-scale offensive called 'Gangstera Te War' (War on Gangsters) on January 20, 2026, as part of a mission to eradicate organised crime and make the state gangster-free. This initiative includes a massive, ongoing operation called 'Operation Prahaar'.

The government has emphasised public cooperation and launched a dedicated, anonymous ‘Anti-Gangster Helpline’ number, 93946-93946, for citizens to share information. A reward policy with a total sanctioned amount of ₹10 crore has been approved, offering a cash reward of up to ₹10 lakh for information leading to the arrest of a significant gangster.
