In a first-of-its-kind initiative, the Chandigarh Education Department has mandated a dress code for teachers in government schools of the city, prescribing formals for men and saree or salwar-kameez for women.
An official release issued on Saturday stated that the move aims to unify the appearance of educators, foster professionalism, and create an environment more conducive to learning.
"The uniform specifications of the dress outlines that female employees will don sarees, salwar kameez, while male employees will wear formal shirts and trousers," according to an official release issued by the department.
With this decision, Chandigarh becomes the first state or Union Territory in the country to implement a formal dress code for teachers in government schools.
"In a significant move towards enhancing the professional environment within educational institutions, the Chandigarh Education Department, acting on the advice of the Administrator UT Chandigarh, has implemented and inducted an elegant uniform for teachers across government schools," it said.
The initiative was first rolled out at the PM Shri Government Model Senior Secondary School in Sector-14, Dhanas, Chandigarh. Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria has praised the move, highlighting that "a unified dress code not only promotes equality among staff but also instills a sense of pride and professionalism."
With this move, the department wanted to implement the dress code across all its schools before the commencement of classes after the 2025 summer vacation.
Officials said that standardising attire would help minimize socio-economic disparities among staff, improve team spirit, and set a positive example for students.
