Chandigarh-Manali highway blocked, hundreds rescued in Manali

Heavy rains continued to lash several parts of Himachal Pradesh on Thursday. The Chandigarh–Manali highway was blocked at Kanchi Mor near Pandoh after a portion of the road caved in, stranding many vehicles on both sides of the road.

Heavy rains continued to lash several parts of Himachal Pradesh on Thursday. The Chandigarh–Manali highway was blocked at Kanchi Mor near Pandoh after a portion of the road caved in, stranding many vehicles on both sides of the road.

 

In Manali, the police rescued around 130 people trapped in the Tibetan Colony after the Beas river overflowed and entered the area. An NDRF team also rescued 425 students and teachers stranded at Arni University in Indora, Kangra.

 

According to the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC), 536 roads are currently closed across 11 districts. Of these, 217 are in Mandi district and 167 in Kullu. Over 1,184 power transformers and 503 water supply schemes have been disrupted. Communication networks in Chamba are also down.

 

Rainfall figures since Wednesday evening showed 108 mm at Pandoh, 63.8 mm at Bhareri, 56.8 mm at Mandi, 53 mm at Gohar, 36.6 mm at Naina Devi and 25 mm at Manali. Thunderstorms also hit Shimla, Jubbarhatti and Sundernagar.

 

Between June 20 and August 26, 158 people have lost their lives and 38 people are missing in rain-related incidents. There have been 90 flash floods, 42 cloudbursts and 85 major landslides so far. Losses have been estimated at Rs 2,623 crore.

 

The weather office has issued a yellow alert for heavy rains in isolated areas of Himachal till Sunday.
