Several schools in Chandigarh received bomb threat emails on Tuesday morning, following which police and security agencies carried out detailed searches at the campuses.
Officials said no explosives or suspicious items were found during the checks.
Vivek High School in Sector 38 was among the schools that received the threat. Carmel Convent School in Sector 9-B, St John’s High School and Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School in Sector 26, and St Stephen’s School in Sector 45-B also received similar emails.
The emails claimed that bombs had been placed inside the school premises.
After receiving the threats, school authorities alerted the police and evacuated students and staff as a precaution. Chandigarh Police teams, bomb detection and disposal units and sniffer dog squads reached the schools and searched the campuses thoroughly.
An official said students who had arrived with their parents were sent home, while the remaining students were moved to a safe area outside the buildings. They will be allowed to return only after security agencies give clearance.
The latest incident comes amid a number of similar bomb threat emails sent to schools and other major institutions in the region in recent months. Security agencies are maintaining heightened vigilance ahead of the Independence Day celebrations.
A police officer said the email was received on Tuesday morning and the police were immediately informed. Given the security arrangements for Independence Day, officials said every emergency call is being treated seriously.
In earlier incidents, threat emails have also been sent to schools, the Punjab and Haryana High Court, the Mayor’s office and other key government offices.
Police have started a technical probe to trace the origin of the emails and identify those behind the threats.
Security has been tightened around the schools that received the messages, with additional precautionary measures put in place.
