In a swift move, the Asansol-Durgapur Police Commissionerate on Thursday submitted the chargesheet in the Durgapur medical college gang-rape case to the Sub-divisional magistrate’s Court — just 20 days after the incident took place.
According to legal sources, six individuals have been named as accused in the chargesheet. Among them, the victim’s classmate has been charged with rape, while three others face charges of gang rape, and two have been accused of extortion.
The horrific incident occurred on the night of October 10, when a student of a private medical college in Durgapur allegedly went out with her classmate around 8 p.m. The classmate, along with several others, allegedly sexually assaulted her near the college campus.
Following the assault, police launched a swift investigation and arrested the classmate and five youths from a nearby village within days of the incident.
Court sources confirmed that the chargesheet was filed after a fast-tracked investigation. The presiding judge has now directed a speedy trial in the matter.
Special Public Prosecutor Bibhas Chatterjee praised the police for their efficiency, saying, “We have prepared the charge sheet by conducting a speedy investigation. It was submitted to the court today. This is a big success for the Police Commissionerate. We hope that the trial will begin within two months.”
The accused, currently in judicial custody, will be produced in court again on Friday.
A few days earlier, the victim had participated in a Test Identification (TI) parade conducted inside the jail premises. She, other than her classmate, successfully identified all five arrested individuals, including the “main accused”, according to police officials.
Police said that the victim is currently at her home in Odisha, but she may be summoned again for the upcoming trial proceedings.
