In a tragic incident near Chennai, a couple and their two-year-old daughter were charred to death in a house fire allegedly triggered by a burning mosquito coil late Monday night. The deceased have been identified as Parthiban (36), a construction worker from the Pandur area near Guduvanchery, his wife Chitra (25), and their daughter Jayashree (2).

According to police, Parthiban, along with his wife and child, had visited his sister Maheshwari’s home on Monday evening to see her ill baby. Due to the child’s deteriorating health, Maheshwari and her husband Ramnath rushed the baby to a hospital in the middle of the night, while Parthiban and his family stayed back at the house.

After dinner, the couple went to sleep in a bedroom with their daughter. As there were many mosquitoes in the room, they lit a mosquito coil before going to bed, police said.

"When Maheshwari and her husband returned from the hospital early Tuesday morning, they were shocked to find the house engulfed in flames. Maheshwari immediately alerted the fire brigade, following which firefighters rushed to the spot and managed to douse the blaze. During the operation, the bodies of Parthiban, Chitra and Jayashree were recovered from the house. The bodies were shifted to Chengalpattu Government Hospital for
post-mortem examination.

The Guduvanchery police have registered a case and launched an investigation. Preliminary findings suggest that clothes kept near the mosquito coil may have caught fire, which quickly spread through the house. Police are currently questioning neighbours and family members as part of the investigation.
