A senior officer in the Chennai Police, holding the rank of Joint Commissioner, has been suspended following sexual harassment allegations made by two women constables.
D. Mahesh Kumar, who was overseeing the Chennai North Traffic division, was placed on suspension after an internal investigation was launched into the accusations. The Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) has been tasked with handling the case.
This incident adds to a growing concern over sexual harassment cases across Tamil Nadu, particularly in government offices and educational institutions.
A troubling case emerged in December when a 19-year-old student at Anna University in Chennai was sexually assaulted. Her male friend was also attacked during the incident on campus.
Additionally, last week saw two women being harassed inside moving trains in Tamil Nadu. One of the victims, who was pregnant, tragically suffered a miscarriage as a result of the incident. The rising number of such cases has prompted widespread concern.

In response to the surge in harassment cases, Tamil Nadu's Director General of Police (DGP) Shankar Jiwal convened a meeting with the Chief Secretary yesterday to discuss potential measures to combat the issue and ensure the safety of women in the state.
The string of incidents comes on the heels of a similar case in Karnataka, where a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) was suspended after a video surfaced, showing him engaging in inappropriate behavior with a woman inside his office.
The footage, reportedly recorded in his official chamber, went viral on social media, sparking outrage and swift disciplinary action from authorities.
These recent events have raised serious concerns over misconduct within law enforcement, with increasing calls for more rigorous oversight and accountability to prevent such behavior within the ranks.
