In a shocking incident at a private school in Chhattisgarh, five students from Classes VIII and IX— including three girls—allegedly conspired to set off an explosion in the school washroom to target a teacher they were upset with, police said on Monday.
According to officials, the students purchased a piece of sodium online and placed it inside the toilet cistern, knowing it would react violently with water. However, instead of harming their intended target, the explosion severely injured a nine-year-old girl who happened to be in the washroom at the time of the blast.
Following the incident, four of the accused students were detained and sent to rehabilitation homes, where they will undergo counseling, Bilaspur Superintendent of Police Rajnesh Singh told The Times of India.
The fifth student, who is currently staying with relatives, has not yet been taken into custody but will soon be presented before the Juvenile Justice Board.
