Flash floods triggered by incessant rains in Chhattisgarh’s Bastar division have claimed eight lives, destroyed nearly 500 homes, and left over 2,000 people displaced, officials said on Thursday.
Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, who is visiting South Korea, held a video conference with senior officials and district collectors from Bastar, Dantewada, Bijapur, and Sukma to review relief and rehabilitation measures.
“People should feel that the government stands firmly with them in this hour of crisis,” Sai said, urging authorities to provide immediate relief compensation for losses of human life and livestock.
Revenue Minister Tank Ram Verma reported that floods have also killed 96 livestock, damaged 16 culverts and bridges, and disrupted normal life in the region. “The road from Bijapur to Dantewada has opened. The flooding of a culvert near Chhindgarh between Jagdalpur and Sukma has disrupted vehicular movement. It is likely to be restored by tonight. The Sukma-Konta road will also be opened once the water level reduces,” he said.

Sai directed officials to prioritise the distribution of tarpaulins, bamboo and timber poles, and cash relief for repairing damaged houses. The CM also instructed departments to restore road connectivity, repair bridges and culverts, and ensure electricity supply resumes swiftly.
Revenue Secretary Reena Babasaheb Kangale briefed the CM on the situation, confirming that additional rations had been allocated and were being delivered to affected families. The collectors reported that water levels had begun to recede at most locations, signalling that the crisis was gradually coming under control.
“The state government will reach every affected family. Our goal is to ensure timely relief to every person and to accelerate rehabilitation efforts,” Sai added.
