Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai on Saturday informed that MBBS course in the state will now be offered in Hindi, marking a significant shift in the state's medical education system.
CM Sai made the announcement on the occasion of 'Hindi Diwas', stating that the change would take effect from the 2024-25 academic session.
Sai explained that the move aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of imparting medical education in Hindi, an idea expressed during a rally in Uttar Pradesh in 2022.
"Our government has taken a big decision on Hindi Diwas. The MBBS course will now also be taught in Hindi. Books in Hindi will be introduced in the first year from this session," he stated.
He emphasised that the decision was part of a broader effort to shift away from the Macaulay-era education system and to fully implement the National Education Policy in the state.
"This will benefit students from rural areas who come from Hindi-medium backgrounds. Many face challenges with English, despite their talent. Studying in Hindi will help them develop a better understanding of medical concepts and become good doctors," Sai said.
Hindi Diwas celebrates the Constituent Assembly’s 1949 decision to adopt Hindi, written in Devanagari script, as India’s official language.
The change is expected to ease barriers for students pursuing medical careers in Chhattisgarh.
