The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government in Chhattisgarh has declared the Hindi film Chhava, based on the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, tax-free in the state.
The decision aims to celebrate India’s rich historical heritage and inspire patriotism among the people, particularly the youth.
Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai made the announcement on Wednesday night, stating that the film, in which actor Vicky Kaushal portrays Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, will be exempt from state taxes. An official statement confirmed the move, emphasising the government's intent to make the film more accessible to audiences.
With this decision, Chhattisgarh becomes the third BJP-ruled state to grant Chhava tax-free status, following Madhya Pradesh and Goa. The film, which was released on February 14, has been widely appreciated for its portrayal of the valiant Maratha warrior.
CM Sai: ‘Chhava’ a tribute to valour and self-respect
Speaking about the decision, CM Sai described Chhava as more than just a film—it is a tribute to India's historical traditions, courage, and self-respect. He urged citizens to watch the movie to understand the legacy of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj.
"The film vividly depicts the extraordinary bravery, sacrifice, and strategic brilliance of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, who fought relentlessly against the Mughals and other invaders. His unwavering dedication to the nation serves as an inspiration to all," Sai stated.
‘Chhava’ Earns Over ₹417 crore worldwide
Directed by Laxman Utekar, Chhava has been a major box office success, garnering Rs 417.2 crore worldwide as of Wednesday. The film’s widespread acclaim and strong earnings highlight the audience's interest in historical narratives that celebrate India's rich past.
With Chhattisgarh joining the list of states supporting Chhava, the film continues to make an impact not just as a cinematic spectacle but as a cultural movement promoting India's historical legacy.
