A Chinese drone was discovered inside the high-security Bhopal Central Jail, prompting authorities to start an investigation, officials reported on Thursday.
A prison guard spotted the black, charged drone weighing 30-40 grams near the B-block building between 3:30 pm and 4:00 pm on Wednesday, according to jail superintendent Rakesh Kumar Bangre.
"No one saw the drone land in the Bhopal jail premises," Bangre stated, suggesting it might belong to children playing near the prison.
The Bhopal Central Jail, located in Madhya Pradesh, spans 151 acres and currently holds 3,600 inmates, exceeding its capacity of 2,600. Among them are 69 high-security prisoners, including 32 members of the banned Students' Islamic Movement of India (SIMI), Bangre added.
The drone has been handed over to Gandhi Nagar police, who have begun an investigation into the incident. "The China-made drone was fully charged when found," Bangre confirmed.
Attempts to get more details from Bhopal Commissioner of Police HC Mishra were unsuccessful.
The Bhopal jail has previously been in the spotlight. In November 2016, eight SIMI undertrials escaped after killing a prison guard. They were later shot dead by police on the outskirts of Bhopal, following an exchange of fire.
