BJP MLA from the Churah Assembly segment in Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh, Hans Raj, was on Thursday granted regular bail by Special Judge, Chamba, in a POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) case registered against him earlier this month.

The bail comes as a political relief for Hans Raj in the midst of the winter session of the State Assembly, especially as Congress MLAs had carried out a protest against the BJP outside the Vidhan Sabha on Wednesday, raising slogans of ‘Beti Bachao, BJP Bhagao’.

The court had reserved the order on November 22 after hearing arguments from both sides. The BJP leader appeared before the Special Judge as the anticipatory bail granted to him earlier this month had expired.

The victim had lodged a police complaint in Chamba in August 2024, alleging that Hans Raj had been sending obscene messages to her on phone and had threatened her family. She later retracted from her statement, due to which the matter was closed.

A fresh controversy surfaced on November 7, 2025, when she again filed a complaint at the police station under the stringent POCSO Act. She also uploaded a video on Facebook alleging that her family’s life was in danger while accusing Hans Raj of “ruining her life”.

The BJP leader denied all allegations on social media, calling it a political conspiracy. He also allegedly commented on the lifestyle of the victim, which had invited criticism. He had also stated that he planned to file a defamation suit against the complainant.

Following this, the victim’s father, accompanied by a local Congress leader, had alleged that they were kidnapped, forcibly taken to Shimla, their mobile phones were broken, and they were issued threats that their house would be set on fire.

A Chamba Police official said the case is under investigation and the evidence is being scrutinised.
