The West Bengal Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Friday served a notice to Trinamool Congress (TMC) national general secretary and Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee, directing him to appear before investigators on June 16 in connection with a case linked to an alleged provocative statement made during election campaigning.

A CID team reached Banerjee’s residence in Kolkata in the afternoon to personally serve the notice but found that he was not present at home. Family members and office staff informed the officers that he had gone to attend a meeting at the nearby residence of TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee.

After waiting for nearly two hours, the officers attempted once again to serve the notice directly. As Banerjee could not be met, the document was eventually handed over to an employee at his office, according to officials.

“A notice has been duly served as part of the ongoing investigation. He has been directed to appear before the investigating officers on June 16,” a senior police officer said.

The case originates from a complaint regarding remarks allegedly made by Banerjee during election campaigning. The complaint was initially lodged at Baguiati Police Station and later transferred through the Cyber Crime Police Station under the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate before being taken over
by the CID for further investigation.

Officials said the probe is being carried out as per due process and the notice was part of routine procedural steps in the ongoing investigation.

The development comes a day after Banerjee appeared before CID officers at their headquarters in Kolkata, where he was questioned for nearly six hours in a separate case related to alleged forgery of signatures linked to the appointment of the Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly.

A CID officer also confirmed that Banerjee has been asked to appear again before the agency on June 14 in connection with the separate case.

The summons adds to a series of ongoing legal and political challenges involving the TMC leader as investigations continue across multiple cases.
