A political controversy surrounding remarks about “playing DJs” has escalated into a legal matter involving Trinamool Congress (TMC) All India General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee. A court has granted the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) permission to collect and examine a sample of his voice as part of an ongoing investigation.

The Bidhannagar Magistrate Court approved the CID’s plea, allowing investigators to proceed with the voice sample collection, which is scheduled for June 30. The move is aimed at verifying the authenticity of viral audio and video recordings from a public meeting held in the run-up to the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections.

The controversy starts from a speech delivered by Abhishek during an election campaign rally, where he issued a strong warning to political opponents. In his address, he stated that he would “see who comes to save them after May 4 (the result day)” and asserted that “the DJ will play— and it will play so loudly that it will leave ears ringing.” The remarks have been widely circulated and criticised as provocative.

Following the speech, a resident of Baguiati filed an FIR at the Bidhannagar Cyber Crime Police Station, alleging that the statements were reckless and inflammatory. Considering the seriousness of the allegations, the case was subsequently transferred to the CID for further investigation.

Since taking over the probe, CID officials have intensified their efforts. Abhishek has already been summoned to Bhabani Bhavan, the agency’s headquarters, where he faced extensive questioning in connection with the case.

As part of the investigation, police also conducted a search operation at the residence of former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Harish Chatterjee Street. During the visit, officials questioned Aditi Gayen, a relative of Abhishek who was reportedly responsible for managing his social media accounts. Investigators believe her testimony could provide crucial insights, particularly in relation to the dissemination of the controversial speech online.

Based on digital and circumstantial evidence gathered so far, the CID approached the court seeking permission to collect Abhishek’s voice sample. The upcoming voice test is expected to play a key role in determining the authenticity of the recordings and shaping the future course of the investigation.

At a time when the TMC is navigating a politically turbulent phase following the debacle in the 2026 Assembly elections, Abhishek on Tuesday approached the Calcutta High Court seeking permission to travel abroad for urgent medical treatment related to a pre-existing eye condition.

On Tuesday, the counsel for the Diamond Harbour MP mentioned the matter before Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya, requesting the court’s approval for the proposed visit. Sources indicate that the hearing is likely to take place later this week.
