TMC MP Kakali Ghosh Dastidar gets Y-category CISF security amid political shifts and reduced protection for several senior leaders.

Kakali Ghosh Dastidar’s security arrangement has undergone a sudden and notable upgrade, with the Centre granting the Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP from Barasat, North 24 Parganas, ‘Y’ category protection amid an ongoing political churn in West Bengal. Since Monday, CISF personnel have been deployed at her residence in Madhyamgram and have been accompanying her during public movements, including organisational meetings in the Barasat-Madhyamgram region.

The enhanced security presence has drawn significant attention from local residents as well as political observers, especially given the simultaneous reduction in security cover for several senior leaders of the former ruling party TMC.

This development comes at a time when multiple senior TMC leaders, including General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee, former minister Firhad Hakim, and Rajya Sabha MP and former DGP Rajiv Kumar, have reportedly seen their security arrangements and convoy details scaled down by the state administration following the political transition and the formation of a BJP-led government in West Bengal.

The contrast between the tightening of security for select individuals and the curtailment of protection for others has fueled speculation in political circles, particularly as Kakali’s upgraded security status came shortly after internal developments within the TMC. She was recently removed from the post of Chief Whip of the party in the Lok Sabha, a position that was subsequently reinstated to Kalyan Banerjee.

Following her removal, Kakali posted a strongly worded message on social media, reflecting on her long association with the party and referencing decades of political engagement. The post, which highlighted her journey since the late 1970s and early 1980s, sparked widespread discussion within political and party circles, with many interpreting it as an expression of dissatisfaction over her changed role within the parliamentary structure.

While no official explanation has been issued regarding the decision to provide central security cover, political observers note that such allocations are typically based on threat assessments forwarded by intelligence agencies. The state BJP leadership has suggested that security concerns may arise from internal party dynamics as well, pointing to past incidents of political violence in West Bengal. They have also emphasised that as a Member of Parliament, she is eligible for central protection if credible inputs are received.

Within the TMC, the development has generated mixed reactions, with some viewing it as an administrative decision based on security inputs, while others see it as politically significant given the broader context of security reductions for other leaders. The simultaneous shift has added to ongoing discussions about internal realignments within the party following recent electoral setbacks.

Kakali, however, has not made any public statement regarding the enhanced security cover. Known for her long-standing association with party leadership, her political journey is closely tied to Mamata Banerjee, with their association tracing back to student politics in 1976, when both were active in the Calcutta political circuit. Over the decades, she has remained part of Mamata Banerjee’s political evolution, beginning in the mid-1980s and continuing through successive phases of the party’s growth.

The recent reinstatement of Kalyan Banerjee as Chief Whip is also being viewed within the broader context of organisational restructuring within the TMC, particularly after its underwhelming electoral performance. Party insiders suggest that leadership roles are being reshaped to strengthen parliamentary assertiveness, with Kalyan’s recent active presence in legal and political forums contributing to his return to a key position.
