The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) will officially take charge of security at Mizoram’s Lengpui airport on April 24, following a directive from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). Around 120 armed CISF personnel will be deployed to provide counter-terrorist protection at the state’s only airport, located in Lengpui, about 35 km from Aizawl in Mamit district.
This move marks the 69th airport in India to come under CISF’s counter-terrorist security cover. Previously, the airport was guarded by a joint team of Mizoram police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).
Lengpui airport, constructed in February 1998, holds the distinction of being the first airport in India built by a state government, according to the Airports Authority of India. It has a tabletop runway and operates flights to Kolkata, Delhi, Guwahati, Silchar and Imphal, serviced by IndiGo and Alliance Air.
The decision for CISF deployment followed a recent threat assessment by central intelligence agencies. As part of the security arrangement, the CISF’s Aviation Security Group (ASG) will manage access control, passenger screening and baggage checks. Additionally, vehicle-mounted Quick Reaction Teams (QRTs) equipped with armed commandos will be stationed to respond swiftly to any threat or emergency.
The CISF, designated as the national civil aviation security force, is tasked with ensuring anti-sabotage and counter-terrorist safety at major civil airports across the country, handling the safety of lakhs of domestic and international travelers every day.
