Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal asserted on Wednesday that the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) would not affect the indigenous population of Assam, expressing confidence that the ruling NDA would secure at least 12 out of the 14 Lok Sabha seats in the state in the upcoming elections.
Sonowal, who is contesting from the Dibrugarh seat as the BJP candidate, stated that all sections of society in Assam, irrespective of caste, creed, or religion, are content with the NDA government's performance over the past decade, emphasising its commitment to safeguarding their interests.
"The CAA is a national law. Despite baseless provocative statements from the opposition, the common and well-informed citizens of Assam understand that it will not jeopardise their interests," Sonowal remarked, urging against the dissemination of inflammatory misinformation.
Highlighting the BJP government's initiatives to protect and empower indigenous Assamese, Sonowal emphasised that land rights and documentation have been granted to indigenous individuals who previously lacked land holdings.
Regarding the estimated number of individuals who could obtain citizenship under the CAA in Assam, Sonowal mentioned the launch of a portal for applications, indicating that the precise figure would become evident once the process commences.
Anticipating a favourable outcome for the NDA in the upcoming elections, Sonowal expressed confidence in securing over 12 seats based on current discussions and prevailing circumstances.
The BJP, along with allies Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and United People's Party Liberal (UPPL), has nominated candidates for all 14 seats in Assam.
In response to questions about campaigning in Dibrugarh and the replacement of Rameswar Teli by Sonowal, the Union Minister acknowledged widespread support and encouragement from diverse sections of the populace.
Reflecting on his return to Dibrugarh, Sonowal conveyed gratitude for the warmth and hospitality extended by the residents.
Addressing Teli's denial of a ticket and potential resentment, Sonowal emphasised that it was a party decision, underscoring Teli's integrity and service to the nation.
Acknowledging opposition candidate Lurinjyoti Gogoi, Sonowal reiterated respect for all candidates, emphasising the need for constructive democratic competition.
Regarding potential aspirations for the Chief Ministerial position, Sonowal emphasised the primacy of party and national interests over individual considerations, citing the BJP's ethos of prioritising the nation and party above personal ambitions.
Sonowal, who previously served as Assam's Chief Minister, transitioned to the Centre following the 2021 elections, with Himanta Biswa Sarma assuming the Chief Ministerial role.
