Kanpur Police got a breakthrough in tracking the illegal kidney transplant racket after arresting a man, Rohit Tewari, a 34-year-old Class XII passout who was posing as a doctor and had performed 30 transplants/surgeries without any qualification.
The racket was busted by the Police on March 31. Since then, Tewari has been evading arrest, residing in various locations, including Goa, Kathmandu, Manali, and Shimla. He also had a bounty of Rs 25,000.
The racket used digital platforms like Telegram to connect with victims across major Indian cities —including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Lucknow — as well as Nepal. The syndicate targeted impoverished individuals, offering them between Rs 5 lakh and Rs 10 lakh for a kidney, only to resell the organs to wealthy patients for staggering amounts ranging from Rs 60 lakh to Rs 1 crore.
The Police came to know about the racket after they received a tip-off, following which they raided Ahuja Hospital in Maswanpur and found out the information to be true.
According to Police Commissioner Raghubir Lal, the mastermind, 34-year-old Rohit Tewari, was merely a Class XII passout who successfully posed as a medical doctor. Evidence seized by the police includes numerous photographs of Tewari dressed in a medical apron with a stethoscope, and even images of him actively performing surgeries inside an operating theater.
