A day after 16 schools in Delhi received bomb threats via email, the police apprehended a Class 12 student of a private school suspected of orchestrating the hoax.
The student’s interrogation has unveiled alleged involvement in a group that had been sending bomb threat emails to schools across Delhi for several months, according to sources.
The police have recovered evidence that links the apprehended student to 23 hoax emails, allegedly sent using VPNs to mask their identities. Investigators believe all the students involved hail from the same school.
A senior police officer at the Delhi Police headquarters said, “We are verifying the evidence with the assistance of forensic experts before initiating legal action.”
The threats, sent via Gmail, warned of “massive and highly dangerous explosives” on school premises.
On Wednesday, Tagore International School was the first to report the email at 11:17 a.m., followed by Bluebells School International at 11:40 a.m. Other schools targeted included Modern School, Springdales School, G D Goenka Public School, and St Columba’s School, among others.
Police from the South district tracked the emails using technical surveillance, eventually locating one of the students involved. During questioning, the student admitted to being part of the group behind the hoax emails.
The authorities are probing the roles of other students allegedly involved in the scheme. Forensic investigations are ongoing to confirm the findings.
Delhi Fire Service officials confirmed receiving alerts from schools and conducted searches to rule out any real threat. The hoax has led to heightened security measures across educational institutions.
