A Class XI student in Siliguri has been accused of urinating and spitting on a photograph of West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari inside his classroom, while also hurling extremely vulgar and derogatory abuse at her and her mother— an act that was recorded as a ‘Reel’ and later went viral, triggering widespread outrage across the city.
The incident reportedly took place at Terai Tarapada Adarsha Vidyalaya during the tiffin break, when no teacher was present in the classroom. According to sources, the 17-year-old student filmed the act with the help of friends. The video, once uploaded on social media, spread rapidly and drew sharp condemnation from various quarters.
Following the incident, the student returned to his residence in the Surya Sen Colony area under Ward No. 34 of the Siliguri Municipal Corporation. Later in the afternoon, while he was at Dabgram Maidan, locals who had seen the viral video allegedly identified him. A group of agitated residents, including supporters of a political party, surrounded the student and began protesting.
Tension soon escalated near the student’s home, where an angry crowd allegedly threw eggs at him and subjected him to physical harassment. As the situation intensified, police were alerted. Officers from New Jalpaiguri Police Station rushed to the spot, rescued the minor from the mob, and took him into custody.
Police subsequently registered a suo motu case and produced the accused before the Juvenile Court on Wednesday. Siliguri Police Commissioner Syed Waqar Raza said that the minor had been presented before the court on Thursday and that further legal action would be taken in accordance with judicial directives.
The incident has raised serious concerns about student behaviour, school discipline, and campus security. Notably, Terai Tarapada Adarsha Vidyalaya is currently functioning without a managing committee and is being run by an administrator.
Condemning the episode, Headmaster Ashok Nath termed it “extremely unfortunate and reprehensible.” He said that the act occurred during the tiffin break in the absence of teachers and questioned how the student managed to bring a mobile phone into the school despite strict restrictions. The matter has been reported to the administration for further action.
