Just 48 hours after chairing an administrative meeting in Nadia district, West Bengal’s Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari returned to the region on Thursday, this time on a non-political and spiritual visit to the ISKCON temple in Mayapur.

The visit, however, quickly drew political attention, with observers interpreting it through a wider electoral and symbolic lens. The Chief Minister’s trip to ISKCON Mayapur marked his first official visit to the temple in his capacity as Chief Minister.

Political circles recalled that Union Home Minister Amit Shah had earlier visited Mayapur during a religious programme at the ISKCON temple ahead of state elections, accompanied by Adhikari. The resemblance between past and present visits has fueled speculation over possible political messaging, although the current trip was officially described as a spiritual engagement.

Shortly after assuming office, Adhikari had also visited Belur Math, the headquarters of the Ramakrishna Mission, where he met senior monks and received religious texts authored by Swami Vivekananda. His consecutive visits to major spiritual centres have drawn public and political curiosity across the state.

On Thursday morning, the Chief Minister travelled from the Dumurjala helipad in Howrah by helicopter and landed at Mayapur around 11:00 am. He was received by monks and devotees from India and abroad, greeting them with folded hands before proceeding with the temple schedule.

During his visit, Adhikari first toured the ISKCON goshala, where he is reported to have participated in aarti and performed seva. Plans were also outlined for him to personally feed cattle as part of the temple’s traditional practices.

He later visited the Chandrodaya Temple, one of ISKCON Mayapur’s central attractions, where he offered darshan of Sri Sri Radha Madhava and participated in a special puja. He also took part in a yajna, offering purnahuti for the welfare and prosperity of the temple and the state.

Following the rituals, the Chief Minister was scheduled to hold discussions with senior monks and temple authorities on religious and cultural initiatives.

Security arrangements across the temple complex and surrounding areas were tightened significantly ahead of the visit, with officials describing the setup as extensive and well-coordinated. Despite the formal nature of the visit, a festive atmosphere prevailed, with devotees welcoming the Chief Minister with kirtans, traditional instruments such as khol and kartal, and floral showers.

While the government has described the visit as purely spiritual, the timing and sequence of high-profile religious engagements have led political observers to read deeper significance into the Chief Minister’s movements across the state.
