Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami practiced yoga at his residence complex in Dehradun on Thursday morning in preparation for the International Day of Yoga on June 21. Dhami was joined by officials and staff from the Chief Minister’s Office.
He highlighted that yoga has gained global recognition under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and urged people to incorporate yoga into their daily lives to maintain good health.
"Under the leadership of PM Modi, Yoga has become popular worldwide. Ahead of 21 June, the International Day of Yoga, we organised an event to spread awareness about Yoga today. I appeal to the public to adopt Yoga to stay healthy," the Uttarakhand CM said.
He further said that Uttarakhand is a land of yoga and sages, and added that efforts have been made by the government so that everyone is connected to yoga at the village level. He emphasised that yoga is more than just a physical activity—it is a path to inner peace and self-realisation, serving as a powerful tool to calm the mind and explore the depths of consciousness.
Emphasising the significance of Indian culture, he stated that India has always prioritised human values, and the basic pillar of our Sanatan culture is yoga.
"This is the reason that today yoga has become an integral part of the daily routine of crores of people of the world and is establishing the Indian lifestyle on the global stage," CM Dhami said.
The Chief Minister said in 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had proposed in the United Nations General Assembly to recognise Yoga as an international day, which was supported by 177 countries, and June 21 was declared International Yoga Day.
He also emphasised that yoga is creating new employment opportunities, and a new yoga policy has been introduced to establish Uttarakhand as a global hub for yoga and wellness.
This year, Visakhapatnam is set to host a major event on International Yoga Day, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi expected to take part. The event will bring together over 2.5 lakh people performing yoga at a single venue, aiming to set a new world record.
The event will be held along Visakhapatnam's 27-kilometre-long coastal road, which will serve as the venue for this large-scale yoga session. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu is also expected to participate alongside Prime Minister Modi in the yoga performance.
