Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Wednesday said his government was focusing on restoring road and power connectivity and repairing damaged infrastructure, as rehabilitation work gained momentum a day after heavy rains hit the state.
Cloudbursts and torrential rain overnight left a trail of destruction in Dehradun and other parts of Uttarakhand on Tuesday. Swollen rivers washed away buildings, roads, and bridges, leaving 15 people dead, 16 missing, and around 900 stranded in different locations.
“Our effort is to repair the damaged infrastructure and restore road and power connectivity at the earliest," Dhami said. He added that 85 per cent of damaged power lines have already been restored, and the rest will be completed in a day or two.
Dhami also said he had spoken to the BRO DG and confirmed that the Narendra Nagar–Tehri road will be repaired soon. He noted that about 1,000 stranded people have been rescued so far.
Disaster Management Secretary Vinod Kumar Suman said over 10 roads and bridges were damaged in the calamity, with at least five badly affected where entire stretches were washed away.
The areas that suffered the most damage include Sahastradhara, Premnagar, Mussoorie, Narendra Nagar, Pauri, Pithoragarh, and Nainital.
