Himachal CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said on Friday that his government will continue with the Old Pension Scheme and will not return to the Unified Pension Scheme.
Speaking to mediapersons, Sukhu said, "We did not bring it back for political gains, but to ensure a dignified life for government employees post-retirement. There was pressure to revert to the UPS, but we would not step back from the OPS.”
Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu handed over appointment letters to 312 new drawing teachers at a ceremony on Friday. He also sent off a group of five students from government schools on an educational tour to Japan, where they will explore institutions and historical sites.
At the event, the CM also launched several education-related projects, including the student-centric news platform Desk Express, the Baseline School Ranking Accreditation Report, the geo-tagged and geo-fenced smart 'Upsthiti' (attendance monitoring system), and the Vidya Samiksha Kendra.
Sukhu said, "When the present Congress government came to power, the state was ranked 21st nationally in terms of quality education, but today, we have moved up to the fifth position." He praised teachers for their key role in this progress and called for teamwork to face future challenges in education.
He also mentioned the government is considering a new policy to avoid retiring teachers mid-session, so that students’ learning is not disrupted. So far, 5,100 TGT teachers have been appointed in various streams, and a rationalisation drive is underway to balance student-teacher ratios in schools.
