Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has reprimanded her brother, Babun Banerjee, after he expressed displeasure over the Trinamool Congress re-nominating Prasun Banerjee to contest from the Howrah Lok Sabha seat in the upcoming general election.

“My family and I renounce all relations with Babun…,” CM Banerjee was quoted as saying.

“He creates problems before every election. I don’t like those who are greedy. And I don’t support dynasty politics that I will give him a ticket. I have decided to disown him and cut off all relationships with him,” the TMC supremo told reporters.

Hours earlier Babun Banerjee criticised the TMC for its selection of Prasun Banerjee from the Howrah Lok Sabha seat, who is the sitting MP from the constituency. Babun also clarified that he might contest independently from the same seat, as he knows that his sister (Mamata) will never agree to his proposal.

Prasun Banerjee is a three-time winner of the prestigious Howrah seat, which has been held by the Trinamool since Ambica Banerjee won it from the Communist Party in 2009.

CM Banerjee’s statement has given rise to speculations that her brother might deflect to the Bharatiya Janata Party. A move which will give a boost to the BJP.

However, the Chief Minister’s brother has disagreed with changing turf.

CM Banerjee, on the other hand, has stated, “He is free to do whatever he wants. The party will back its official candidate, Prasun Banerjee.”

This is not the first time that CM Banerjee has publicly rebuked her brother. In January 2022, during the pandemic, she scolded him publicly for roaming with a person who tested Covid positive. Bengal was then reporting a surge in Covid-19 infections.
