Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Monday said the state government has announced an assessment of crop losses caused by recent adverse weather. He assured that farmers affected by the damage would receive compensation after the assessment process is completed.
“We have given orders for 'girdawari' and after conducting it, whoever suffered crop damage will be given compensation,” Mann told mediapersons here.
Mann was responding to questions about widespread crop damage reported from several parts of Punjab after recent spells of rain and hailstorms.
On Sunday, farmers across the state had raised demands for relief, saying standing crops had been badly affected due to unseasonal rainfall and hailstorms.
Farmers reported large-scale damage to crops in districts, including Amritsar, Bathinda, Muktsar, Hoshiarpur, Tarn Taran and Fatehgarh Sahib, where sudden weather changes impacted agricultural fields.
Farmer groups had also urged the state government to immediately carry out crop loss assessments in the affected areas so that compensation could be announced without delay.
Meanwhile, Congress MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa on Sunday wrote to Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, seeking a special relief package for farmers impacted by the weather conditions.
In his letter, Randhawa said since March 30–31, a series of active Western Disturbances combined with cyclonic circulation had brought unseasonal rain, strong winds and repeated hailstorms across many districts of Punjab, including Bathinda, Mansa, Fazilka, Sri Muktsar Sahib, Patiala, Fatehgarh Sahib, Sangrur, Ludhiana, Barnala, Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Hoshiarpur and Gurdaspur.
