In a politically significant move ahead of elections in Punjab, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s cousin Gian Singh Mann joined the BJP on Monday in the presence of Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini and Punjab BJP chief Sunil Jakhar here. The move is expected to trigger fresh political reactions ahead of important elections.
When asked about this political development, Jakhar said "The BJP's family is indeed vast. However, I believe that Bhagwant Mann's own family appears to be fragmenting; this is evident today as Giani Gian Singh Mann, who is not only his cousin but also a close confidant, has joined the BJP. These are signs of the changing times... He had claimed to be joining with a sense of renewed hope, a commitment to a corruption-free environment, and a desire for change... Law and order have completely collapsed in Punjab..."
Gian Singh Mann belongs to Satauj village in Sangrur district and is the son of the younger brother of the Punjab Chief Minister’s father. His entry into the BJP comes at a politically significant time, with civic elections approaching and Assembly polls due early next year.
The move is being viewed as an important political development ahead of upcoming elections in Punjab and is likely to intensify political activity in the state.
On joining the BJP, Gian Singh Mann said "The people of Punjab were swayed by their (AAP) words and brought them to power in 2022, and after coming to power, they changed, they went from being 'common' to 'special'... Instead of fulfilling the promises they made, they started doing the opposite. This left me disheartened with their party, and that's why I decided to leave it. The BJP is moving forward with the slogan of 'Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas', which inspired me to think about joining the BJP... Only the BJP can work for Punjab..."
Gian Singh Mann has earlier been vocal about issues concerning governance in Punjab. He had publicly criticised the state government’s handling of last year’s floods, alleging administrative lapses that added to public hardship. He has also expressed independent views on policy matters through social media posts and public statements, at times differing from the state government’s position.
Political observers believe his joining the BJP may provide the opposition an opportunity to sharpen its attack on the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the run-up to the elections.
