Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi on Tuesday and shared that the state has already suffered damages worth nearly ₹1,000 crore because of the recent flashfloods and cloudbursts since the onset of the monsoon season this year, as per an official statement.
He apprised Shah that the state had lost several precious lives and that key infrastructure such as roads, bridges, buildings, irrigation systems, water and power supply lines had taken a major hit in the disaster-affected areas in the state. The CM asked the Centre for generous support for much-needed relief and restoration work.
Sukhu also pointed out that since 2023, Himachal has been suffering year after year due to natural disasters, with cumulative losses now touching ₹21,000 crore. The state government has been doing whatever it can to provide relief to the disaster-hit people through SDRF and NDRF funds, but repeated natural disasters have stretched its resources thin.
He emphasised that the current Central guidelines for the sanctioning of disaster relief simply don’t work for Himachal’s tough and mountainous terrain. He urged the Centre to revise these norms — specifically, to raise the funding cap from 10 per cent to 30 per cent — so the state can respond more effectively to the growing scale of destruction.
In response, Amit Shah assured the CM that the Centre would extend all possible help to the state.
