Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and National Conference president Farooq Abdullah greeted people on the occasion of Independence Day. Omar visited BalidanStambh in Srinagar and paid rich tributes to the soldiers who lost their lives in the line of duty in the Union Territory.

He unfurled the national flag at Bakshi Stadium and addressed a large gathering who had come to witness and be part of the festivities in the region.

During his address on the occasion of the 80th Independence Day, Omar said, “...Today, we pay tribute to all those who laid down their lives for the freedom of our country. Today is a day of happiness and remembrance as well...”

Meanwhile, Farooq Abdullah on Friday said Independence Day is an occasion to reaffirm the nation’s commitment to democracy, secularism, constitutional values and federalism as he sought the restoration of statehood for Jammu and Kashmir.

He extended warm greetings to the people of India, particularly the people of Jammu and Kashmir, on the eve of the 80th Independence Day.

Senior Abdullah, who had ruled the erstwhile state three times before, said the day should inspire collective resolve to strengthen these foundational principles. He said, “If states are strong, the country becomes strong. In the same spirit, the statehood of Jammu and Kashmir must be restored without any further delay.

“The restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir is an important step towards strengthening public confidence in the region,” he added.
