Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi to discuss the rules of business, reservations, the appointment of the Advocate General, and other important issues. The Home Minister Amit Shah’s office posted a picture of the meeting on its official X handle.
Before arriving in New Delhi, Omar said “the process of statehood restoration is ongoing and a single meeting cannot help restore it.” “I wish a single meeting could have helped us in the restoration of statehood; then we would not have waited so long. It is a process that is ongoing. Whenever I get an opportunity to meet them (the Prime Minister and the Home Minister), I speak about the restoration of statehood,” he said.
Earlier on Sunday, Omar described a Union Territory with a double power centre as “the worst form of government one could ever imagine.” He reiterated that the restoration of statehood was one of the most pressing issues for Jammu and Kashmir and needed to be addressed on priority.
He also clarified the division of powers, stating that the Home Department issues orders related to phone tapping, suspension of mobile services, and internet shutdowns. “Home, law and order, and security are the responsibility of the Lieutenant Governor. So, if the situation deteriorates anywhere and internet services need to be suspended, the LG will issue the orders,” he added.
