Chief Minister M K Stalin on Thursday rejected the BJP’s allegation regarding women’s safety. He said Tamil Nadu is the safest state in the country for women and girls. He claimed that data released by the Central government shows that women’s safety is better in Tamil Nadu. He also alleged that incidents of violence against women were higher in BJP-ruled states.
“I am prepared to explain with proof, if the member is willing to accept,” Stalin said. He was responding to BJP floor leader Nainar Nagenthran, who alleged that crimes against women in the state had increased by 7.51 per cent over the last three years of DMK rule.
Interrupting Nagenthran’s speech in the Assembly, Stalin said it would be appropriate to also mention Manipur’s record. “When you compare the situation with other states, especially the insecurity of women and children due to violence, Tamil Nadu is the safest,” he asserted.
When Nagenthran brought up the DMK’s promise to abolish NEET, the Chief Minister responded, “You have a right. Your party is in power (at the Centre). Will you scrape it at least now?
Replying to the BJP leader’s remark that the state government announced the Rs 2,000 summer grant to women only ahead of elections, Stalin countered by asking, “What happened to the Rs 15 lakh per citizen promised by the BJP?"
