Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang on August 25 announced a significant increase in pension benefits for former legislators in Sikkim, marking a new chapter in the state’s commitment to its political veterans.
The announcement was made during the 22nd Foundation Day of the Former Legislators’ Federation.
Speaking at the event, CM Tamang expressed his satisfaction in being able to honor those who have served the state.
"I am pleased to announce that the state government will increase the pension provided to former legislators," he declared, drawing applause from the audience.
This announcement follows closely on the heels of Tamang’s recent recognition as the most popular Chief Minister in Sikkim, according to India Today's latest Mood of the Nation survey.
The survey, conducted by CVoter, highlighted a remarkable surge in Tamang’s approval ratings, with 55.7% of respondents in Sikkim expressing satisfaction with his leadership as of August 2024.
This marks a dramatic rise from 26% in February and 32.5% in August 2023.
Tamang’s popularity isn’t confined to Sikkim alone. On a national level, he has emerged as the top performer among 30 Chief Ministers surveyed across the country.
The comprehensive survey, conducted from July 15 to August 10, 2024, involved 40,591 respondents from all 543 Lok Sabha segments, supplemented by 95,872 additional interviews from CVoter’s weekly tracker.
Reacting to the survey results, Tamang took to social media to express his gratitude, acknowledging the overwhelming support from the people of Sikkim. “It is your blessings that fuel my dedication to serve with sincerity,” he wrote.
