Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav announced the transfer of ₹1,574 crore to the bank accounts of over 1.29 million women under the ‘Ladli Behna Yojana’ on Monday.
Each recipient will receive ₹1,250 as the 16th instalment of the scheme, originally introduced by former Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan in March last year.
The funds were transferred via a single-click facility during a public event in Bina, Sagar district.
Yadav highlighted the significance of the transfer on X (formerly Twitter), stating, "An amount of ₹1,574 crore was transferred to the accounts of sisters as the 16th instalment of the Ladli Behna Yojana. On this occasion, Bhoomi Pujan and the inauguration of 22 development projects worth ₹215.18 crore, along with the distribution of benefits under various schemes, were also carried out."
The state government usually disburses the funds on the 10th of each month. However, this month’s transfer occurred a day earlier. In the past, delays in the release of funds prompted the opposition Congress to highlight the importance of the 10th day deadline.
The ‘Ladli Behna Yojana’ was launched by Chouhan before the Assembly elections in November 2023. Initially, it provided ₹1,000 per month to women, which has since increased to ₹1,250.
This scheme is an extension of Chouhan’s earlier initiative, the ‘Ladli Laxmi Yojana’, which supports newborn girls.
The BJP, facing strong anti-incumbency sentiment, introduced the scheme amid growing criticism. The party retained power with an absolute majority in the December elections, with many political observers and Congress members crediting the scheme as a decisive factor in the BJP's victory.
