Cold wave conditions across Jammu and Kashmir have intensified, owing to clear and dry weather conditions, officials said. The MeT department had predicted rain and snowfall over scattered places in the Union Territory starting from December 30, but so far, no rainfall or snowfall had occurred in most of the weather stations.
While the plains in the Union Territory continue to experience freezing temperatures, the famous tourist places, Gulmarg and Pahalgam, received fresh snowfall on Wednesday night.
According to the MeT office in Srinagar, “The summer capital recorded a sharp dip on Wednesday night with the minimum temperature settling at minus 0.1 degree Celsius compared to 2.2 degrees Celsius recorded on the previous day.”
“Jammu and Kashmir is likely to witness mainly dry weather with intense cold conditions over the next week. However, there is a possibility of further light rain and snowfall in the higher reaches of the Kashmir Valley over the same period,” it said.
Jammu city remained the warmest place, with minimum temperatures hovering around 6 degrees Celsius, while Gulmarg emerged as the coldest, with minus 7.1 degrees Celsius recorded on Wednesday night.
The Valley's main tourist attractions, Gulmarg, Sonamarg, and Pahalgam, are witnessing a massive rush of tourists following the recent snowfall.
The recent rain and snowfall ended a month-long dry period in Kashmir, which had also been reflected in several water bodies, showing an increase in water levels following the snowfall recorded on December 20-21.
