Cold wave grips region; Srinagar records coldest night

Srinagar witnessed the season’s coldest night as night temperatures plummeted to minus 6-2 degrees Celsius on Thursday night.

Cold weather conditions continued in several areas of Punjab, Haryana, and Jammu and Kashmir on Friday.

 

In Punjab, Pathankot experienced intense cold, recording a minimum temperature of 4 degrees Celsius. While Bathinda and Gurdaspur shivered at 4.6 degrees Celsius and 4 degrees Celsius, respectively.

 

Amritsar recorded a low of 6.4 degrees Celsius, Ludhiana registered a low of 5.7 degrees Celsius, while Patiala recorded a temperature of 6.5 degrees Celsius, the India Meteorological Department said.

 

In Haryana, Sirsa was the coldest place, recording a low of 4.2 degrees Celsius.

 

Hisar also experienced a cold night with a temperature of 5.6 degrees Celsius, while Karnal shivered at 6.8 degrees Celsius. Bhiwani registered a low of 6.9 degrees Celsius.

 

Gurugram, Kurukshetra, and Ambala recorded respective minimum temperatures of 8.3 degrees Celsius, 8 degrees Celsius, and 8.8 degrees Celsius.

 

Coldest night in Srinagar:

 

Srinagar witnessed the season’s coldest night as night temperatures plummeted to minus 6-2 degrees Celsius on Thursday night.

 

The ongoing cold wave has further tightened its grip across Kashmir, with the majority of the weather stations witnessing the season’s coldest night so far, particularly in the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir.

 

Keeping view of the prevailing conditions, the authorities announced early winter vacations in the valley up to 10th classes.

 

Doctors and healthcare experts have advised people to avoid unnecessary travel during the late night hours.

 

Additionally, they have also issued advisories for young and old people to stay inside to avoid falling ill as a result of exposure to the prevailing conditions.

 

Meanwhile, the famous tourist and ski resort Gulmarg also recorded a minimum temperature of Minus 6 degrees Celsius.

 

Another tourist resort, which also serves as one of the base camps for the Annual Amarnath Yatra, recorded a low of minus 8.2 degrees Celsius, while south Kashmir’s Shopian district recorded the lowest temperature across the valley at minus 10 degrees Celsius.

 

The MET centre in Srinagar has forecasted similar weather conditions till the 31st of December, although there is a chance of light snowfall over the higher reaches on 21-22 December.
