As the cold wave intensifies in Himachal Pradesh, the Una district administration on Friday urged people to use fog lights properly and avoid listening to loud music while driving in dense fog.
Una Deputy Commissioner and Chairman of the District Disaster Management Authority, Jatin Lal, also appealed to residents to take necessary measures to protect their health and safety.
"Due to the continuous drop in temperature, the effect of the cold wave and fog may intensify in the coming days. In such a situation, it is imperative to take necessary precautions for safety and protection", he added.
The Deputy Commissioner also urged to all drivers to follow speed limit.
To prevent accidents during dense fog, he advised motorists to drive slowly and use vehicle lights properly. He stressed that fog lights must be used when visibility is very low.
He also asked drivers to maintain adequate distance between vehicles to avoid collisions in case of sudden braking. Drivers were advised to follow road markings as a guide and avoid using mobile phones or playing loud music while driving, he said.
The residents were also urged to remain indoors as much as possible during the cold wave.
Officials advised people to cover their head, ears, hands, feet, and nose when stepping out and stay updated on weather forecasts through radio, television, and newspapers. They recommended wearing multiple layers of woollen clothing to retain body heat and consuming nutritious food and hot beverages to stay warm.
People were also advised to ensure proper ventilation while using heaters, coal stoves, or kerosene appliances, and to keep their mouth covered to protect their lungs from the cold.
Officials cautioned against doing strenuous physical work in very low temperatures, as it may increase the risk of heart attacks. Explaining cold-related illnesses, the Deputy Commissioner said numbness in body parts and white or yellow patches on fingers, toes, ears, and the nose could be signs of frostbite. He added that excessive shivering, lethargy, fatigue, memory problems, or slurred speech are symptoms of hypothermia.
