After a long dry spell, Himachal experienced widespread rain and snowfall over the past 24 hours. The weather brought a sharp drop in temperatures across the hill state, disrupting normal life, while raising hopes for farmers, orchardists, and the tourism sector.

As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the Meteorological Centre in Shimla reported light to moderate rain and snowfall at a majority of places. Heavy rain and snowfall were witnessed at a few locations across the state during the past 24 hours.

IMD data showed a significant decrease in maximum temperatures at most stations, with readings remaining 5 to 12 degrees Celsius below normal.

Minimum temperatures also dropped noticeably. The lowest minimum temperature was recorded at Kukumseri in Lahaul-Spiti at minus 7.2 degrees Celsius, while Bajaura in Kullu witnessed the highest maximum temperature at 18.2 degrees Celsius.

Many areas reported very heavy precipitation. Dharampur received 91.4 mm of rainfall, Solan 68.6 mm, and Kandaghat 67 mm. Palampur, Una, Nahan, and Seobagh also recorded over 50 mm of rain. On the snowfall front, Kothi received 105 cm, Gondla 85 cm, Keylong 75 cm, Kufri 66 cm, Manali 45.8 cm, while Shimla received around 40 cm of snowfall.

Due to the extreme weather, the IMD declared severe cold day conditions in Shimla, Manali, Mandi, Bilaspur, and Hamirpur. Severe cold wave conditions prevailed in Kangra district. Strong winds were also reported, with speeds reaching 81 kmph at Narkanda and 70 kmph in Shimla.

The IMD attributed the weather conditions to a western disturbance in the form of a low-pressure area over Jammu and adjoining Pakistan. This system was supported by cyclonic circulation and a strong subtropical westerly jet stream. The department also stated that another western disturbance is likely to hit northwest India from January 26, which could bring another spell of rain and snowfall.

According to the IMD forecast, light to moderate rain and snowfall are likely at many places on January 27. Weather conditions are expected to gradually improve thereafter. Minimum temperatures may rise by 2–3 degrees Celsius, while maximum temperatures could increase by 6–10 degrees Celsius in the coming days. Dry weather is likely to persist across most parts of the state on January 29 and 30.

Meanwhile, authorities have urged residents and tourists to remain cautious, especially in high-altitude and landslide-prone areas. Road blockages, slippery conditions, and poor visibility are expected during periods of heavy rain and snowfall. So far, over 600 roads have been reported blocked across the state.
