The cold wave sweeping across the hills and valleys of Himachal Pradesh tightened its grip further as Tabo in tribal Lahaul and Spiti recorded the coldest night of the season with a minimum temperature of minus 7.4 degrees Celsius. Minimum temperatures dropped by a few notches across most regions, the weather department said.
High-altitude tribal areas and mountain passes continued to reel under freezing conditions, with temperatures staying six to ten degrees below the freezing point. The Shimla Met office said Keylong, Kukumseri, and Kalpa recorded lows of minus 3.3 degrees, minus 3.1 degrees, and minus 0.4 degrees Celsius, respectively.
Water pipes froze in several higher reaches and tribal belts, disrupting daily life. Residents were forced to wear heavy woollens to stay warm, especially during the early morning hours when icy winds swept through the region and the faint winter sun offered little relief.
The mercury stayed two to five degrees below normal in most places. Seobagh recorded a minimum of 2.0 degrees, followed by Reckong Peo at 2.2 degrees, Manali at 2.5 degrees, and Solan and Narkanda at 2.6 degrees each.
Shimla and Dharamshala were relatively warmer, with minimum temperatures of 8.2 degrees and 8 degrees respectively. Bhuntar, Sundernagar, Kufri, Palampur, and Hamirpur recorded lows of 3.5 degrees, 4.5 degrees, 4.7 degrees, 5.5 degrees, and 5.6 degrees respectively.
During the post-monsoon season from October 1 to November 13, Himachal Pradesh received 69.7 mm of rainfall, against the normal 32.7 mm — an excess of 113 per cent, according to the Met department.
